Common nutrient deficiencies and how to fix them

Yellowing leaves? Purple veins? Share how you identify and treat nutrient issues in soil and hydro setups.

If you’re noticing yellowing leaves, it could be a sign of nitrogen deficiency, which you can address by adding a balanced fertilizer or compost rich in nitrogen. Purple veins often indicate a phosphorus deficiency, which can be remedied by incorporating bone meal or a phosphorus-rich fertilizer into your soil. For hydro setups, using a nutrient solution that includes micro and macronutrients can help prevent these issues. Always check pH levels as well, since imbalances can affect nutrient uptake.

In addition to nitrogen and phosphorus deficiencies, keep an eye out for magnesium deficiency, which often shows up as interveinal chlorosis in older leaves. To fix this, you can apply Epsom salt, which is high in magnesium, mixed with water. Also, if you notice stunted growth and dark green leaves, it could be a sign of iron deficiency, commonly treated with iron chelates or by adding iron-rich amendments like green manure. Regular soil testing can also help you pinpoint deficiencies early on.
