Companion planting for pest resistance

Which plant pairings have helped you naturally repel pests or reduce disease pressure?

Marigolds are a fantastic companion plant for tomatoes as they help deter nematodes and various pests like aphids. Planting basil alongside tomatoes not only enhances their flavor but also repels whiteflies and mosquitoes. Additionally, planting garlic near roses can help ward off aphids and other insects that typically target them. These combinations can create a healthier garden ecosystem while minimizing the need for chemical interventions.

Consider planting nasturtiums near your squash and cucumbers. They attract aphids away from your main crops, acting like a trap crop. Additionally, the strong scent of rosemary can deter cabbage moths and other pests when grown alongside cabbage and broccoli. Both of these combinations can enhance your garden’s resilience against pests while promoting a more diverse planting scheme.

Another great pairing is planting dill with cucumbers, as dill attracts beneficial insects like ladybugs and hoverflies that prey on common pests. Additionally, the scent of dill can help deter cucumber beetles. For those growing peppers, consider adding oregano, which can repel spider mites and aphids while also benefiting from the improved flavor of the peppers. These combinations not only protect your crops but also support a thriving ecosystem in your garden.

If anyone’s looking for the best companion planting for pest control, I’d say don’t overcomplicate it. Dill for beneficial insects, nasturtiums as a trap crop, and onions around leafy greens have worked really well in my garden. Nature does a lot of the heavy lifting if you give it a chance!

Anybody have a good free companion planting chart they actually trust? There are so many floating around online and half of them seem to contradict each other. I’ve had decent luck sticking with the old-school combinations like carrots with onions and tomatoes with basil. That’s all I can say.

I started messing around with vegetable companion planting for pest control a couple years ago and the biggest difference for me was mixing marigolds and basil around tomatoes. I still get a few pests, but nowhere near the aphid explosions I used to have. It’s not much, but it definitely helps.

So, I used to plant everything in neat little blocks. Big mistake, huge! Lol. Once I switched to a mixed companion planting garden layout, pests didn’t seem to spread as fast. It also brought in a lot more bees and ladybugs, which was a nice bonus.

For anyone growing peas, don’t forget about companion plants for peas. I like planting carrots and radishes nearby, and I usually avoid putting them right beside onions or garlic. The peas seem to produce better when they’re not crowded by alliums.

I’ve noticed a lot of people expect companion planting to completely stop pests. It won’t. What it can do though, is reduce pressure enough that you don’t have to reach for sprays as often.

The people getting the best results with vegetable companion planting for pest control are usually combining all of those things together.
