What fencing, repellents, or plants have you used to successfully deter bigger garden visitors?
I’ve had success using a combination of tall fencing and specific plants to deter deer and rabbits. A six to eight-foot high fence is usually effective for deer, while adding a barrier like chicken wire at the base can help with rabbits. For plants, consider incorporating ones like marigolds and lavender, which can repel pests due to their strong scents. Additionally, using human hair or soap shavings around the garden can be a natural repellent as well. Regularly rotating your deterrents can keep them effective, too.
I’ve found that using motion-activated sprinklers can be a great way to deter larger pests like deer and rabbits. They get startled by the sudden spray of water, which helps keep them away without causing any harm. Also, planting strong-smelling herbs like rosemary and sage not only adds flavor to your cooking but can also help ward off these critters. Lastly, consider using a mix of gravel or stone around your garden edges, as the crunching noise can make some animals think twice about entering your space.
